I AM a Flower Designer and Founder of Matagalanplantae
by Almacen Nacex
Humanity’s connection to nature is undeniable. Not simply because we live on Earth, but because we are its fruit; we come from nature. We are born from it. At MAM, we feel enormously lucky. We’re lucky because, thanks to the I AM Project, we’ve gotten to know so many amazing people who not only create beautiful things, but who value nature, just like us. People like Carolina Spencer - a flower designer based in Barcelona and founder of Matagalanplantae.
Carolina is a designer whose fascination with nature in all its forms, colors, and textures transformed her into a florist. She works with flowers and self-made ceramics to create art that expands beyond traditional flower arrangements. Her delicate creations have carved out an entirely new art category for themselves: natural sculptures. They are the result of a rigorous combination of sensitivity, proportion, and color. But these beautifully crafted natural sculptures are created in a particular way that harnesses positive energy, turning each piece into a unique talisman. Spencer describes her work as “graphic, minimal, colorful and powerful.”
"Pretty much eve
The name Matagalanplantae, when translated from Spanish, can roughly be understood in English as “kill Prince Charming.” This darkly playful name stems from Spencer’s desire transform social conventions, such as soley giving flowers at weddings or deaths. It is a statement declaring that nature does not have to be reserved and tamed only for these events. Instead, with her natural sculptures, Spencer asks that we consider a world in which nature is effortlessly, beautifully integrated and celebrated in our day-to-day lives.
As a sustainable wood watch brand, MAM is thrilled to be part of the generation that is in the process of reconnecting with its innate sensitivity to nature in such an honest, conscious, and meaningful way. “It’s important to realize that pretty much everything in this world has been constructed in the wrong way” says Spencer, regarding the destructive, unsustainable nature of mass production. “[If we] focus on what we feel a connection with, between ourselves and the universe, that will bring a massive change.”
“I chose the FERRA 640 watch. What I like the most about my MAM watch is the material it’s made from, as well as its simplicity, design, and elegance. I also love the fact that MAM mixes different disciplines in their visual aesthetic. Being able to choose between interchangeable straps is great, too!”
Matagalanplantae is a direct reflection of Spencer — she has an organic, free-flowing approach to the world. “I don’t have any particular type of routine,” she tells MAM. “I do some weekly maintenance of four clients, and that’s all very organized work. The rest of my hours and days are quite freestyle. I don’t have any kind of work ritual.” She prefers to let routine go. Instead, she allows her thoughts, feelings, and energy lead the process. “Follow your intuition,” she says. “Learn the technique then try to break it. That way, you can find your own.”
